Magda Górska Interview — “NFT was calling me through ether”

Magda Górska is the artist behind the fascinating digital collages created with the only tool she uses — her mobile phone.

Her works have been exhibited in New York, Barcelona, Edinburgh and Warsaw and now she has introduced her works to the NFT space.

A blend of minimal abstract art, simple shapes and structures — intellectually stimulating and fun-to-look-at collages — instantly caught community’s attention.

Magda is one of the first artists whose NFT artworks were acquired by ForeverLands Vault, so we sat down and asked a few questions to get to know her better.

— Take us through your process. What does a regular day of Magda Górska look like?

I cannot start my day without greeting my followers. Drinking my morning coffee I publish my „good morning” posts. I also need to catch up with the news from last night, reply to all the questions — I try not to leave a question or comment unanswered.

Then I go to work — I sit down and prepare my work. It is not a typical 9 to 5 work — it is much more. You never know when inspiration for a collage will pop up. And more — since we are living in a global village, forming global tribes, we need to communicate. Time zones are a nuisance. My family tries to understand why even after 11 PM I’m still tweeting… But that is the time when the US becomes active.

Do I miss my regular 9 to 5 corporate job? Not in the least bit!

— Your works are so aesthetic, some are really fun, with an ironic and unexpected turn. Where do you take inspiration from?

Literally everywhere! Everything may trigger an idea for a collage. Sometimes it may be politically motivated, but mostly it comes from everyday life. At the beginning of my artistic path, I took pictures of objects surrounding me, but giving them another meaning, role. When I found an old kettle, I transformed it into a galaxy, far far away.

— A viewer admiring the simple shapes and different structures instantly finds oneself searching for a meaning in your collages. What does this artwork represent about you?

I feel that my art is my emotional diary — I try to vent my emotions through my artwork. In every piece there is a part of me. That is why, it is sometimes very hard for me to let go of my artworks — that was the case of my „Golden Girls” series. But at least I know, they went to good homes [laughs].

— You’ve been showcasing your artworks on social platforms for quite a long time as well as have exhibited them in galleries around the world. I believe you have some fascinating stories to share. What is the most exciting thing to happen in your career as an artist?

Each and every moment is special for me. There are however several milestones. The first one was, when I took a leap of faith and quit my steady job. My husband bought a „500 dishes from potatoes” cookbook saying, it is the only thing we will be eating from now on.

Another moment came, when I had my first exhibition — I couldn’t believe it. I also remember, when I was working on a series of collages featuring men — fashion designers, models, scholars, sportsmen. It was amazing — people from the front pages of newspapers and magazines replied to me, agreed to work with me. I was a bit intimidated, but also very happy, when Karim Rashid was giving me his advice.

Last, but not least was the moment, when I sold my first NFT — I just couldn’t believe that in the multitude of fantastic works, someone had found mine and wanted to have it.

— It was truly surprising to find out that all your artwork has been created using just your phone. It is an interesting and unique approach! How did you come up with the idea of creating on a mobile phone?

Mobile phone is now indispensable, it is glued to our hands. It is an object that serves as a wallet, ID, calendar and more. Since I was working as a PR expert, I needed to get to know how social media works. So I started publishing black and white photos, later I added filters, started to change them, added colors and discovered the huge potential of mobile phone’s tools.

— Your method of creating is unconventional to the physical art world, yet you have gained a great amount of attention from traditional art lovers and collectors, which is really exciting to see. What brought you to the NFT world? What was your experience entering the crypto art space?

In our fast changing world, NFT is the place to be. It is the possibility to reach people with our art even in the most remote parts of the globe. It is something incredible — you can cooperate with people from India, Malaysia, Japan, Costa Rica or the States.

NFT was calling me through the ether [laughs]. I simply needed to be here — I have found my place, thanks to the support of some of my fantastic friends, to whom I am very grateful.

— Indeed, NFTs have the power to disrupt and spark innovation in the art world in a way it hasn’t been done for centuries. Since we mentioned disruptive things — what were your impressions of the ForeverLands project?

I was naturally very excited! It is a great project, which is popularizing NFTs. It was a fantastic idea and I am glad and honored I could be a part of it.

— Some of your NFTs will be part of the ForeverLands Vault which will be distributed to the players in a fractionalized form. What is your opinion on fractionalized NFT art from an artist’s perspective?

I believe that everything in the Metaverse makes sense. It is yet another way of reaching more and more people with NFTs. My ambition is to create 1/1 artworks, but I can understand that some people would like to share those pieces.

— It is common for young artists who are just starting out to be afraid of the unknown. What advice would you give other artists entering the space?

Don’t be afraid — go for it! There is a great community who will support you, give you great advice. Of course, during your voyage through the crypto and NFT world, you will be contacted by scammers and people full of negative energy. But don’t let that discourage you. Haters gonna hate. Just put your armor on and do your best. You know, you are going to succeed. Keep dreaming!

— Now that you got into the space what is your take on the future of NFTs, Crypto and digital art?

Digital art, NFTs and Crypto are the technology of today and tomorrow. It is convenient, easy to use and easily accessible. 50 years ago we wouldn’t dream of walking and listening to music at the same time. 40 years ago it seemed impossible to communicate with someone from another part of the globe within seconds. 30 years ago it seemed like science-fiction having a phone in one’s pocket. Now it may seem strange that you can send unique artwork as a string of numbers and display it within seconds miles away, but it is happening.

— And the last quick question — are you keeping ETH or converting it to FIAT currency?

Actually both. I am converting some of my ETH into FIAT, just to fulfill my basic needs and invest in me and my tools. It gives me possibilities to improve my software and hardware, further develop my skills and opens new opportunities.

Thank you for chatting with us, Magda! It was very nice to know more about you as an artist and your thoughts on this very new and fast developing space!
